A coffee shop built from palm leaves was opened in the 1950s at the outskirts of Dubai. To reach it, people used to cross from Shindagha which appears in the background of the picture.
A group of ladies who celebrated “Al Touminah” are crossing back to Shindagha on abra after touring the neighbourhoods of Deira and Bur Dubai. Al Touminah is a festive celebration that takes place after a child has memorized the Holy Qur’an, touring with his peers the neighbourhoods and receiving rewards.
HMS Wild Goose is anchored off Shindagha, the nearest safe harbour to the beach. A local boat used to sail back and forth between the ship and the beach. The photo is taken by Codrai on 1958.
